I'm pulling my hair out trying to install *anything* on this new "parts is
parts" system, much less install linux.

I've put together a system on a shoestring budget. I have an 8 gig drive
master, and a 4 gig slave. I downloaded Mandrake 9.0 in October and was
able to get in running back then, but was not able to get XWindows
running. I've since then tried different hard drives.

Somewhere along the way I've screwed something up. Upon trying to install
Mandrake again, I get this error when trying to boot from the CD:

Boot from ATAPI CD-ROM:
  1. FD System Type-(00)

And it simply hangs there. I've tried a newly created Mandrake disk, as
well as an NT4 disk. Nothing seems to be working. The CD spins up when I
reboot but stops soon after I get the above message. This CD worked back
in October and I haven't done anything to change it since then.

I'm about ready to give up on this hardware completely. Does anyone know
of a really cheap system that I can purchase.. or does anyone have a
working linux system that they don't need anymore and is willing to get
rid of at a good price?

Thanks for any help.

james
