I say GUI's are great. Run a lightweight window manager like fluxbox or blackbox and be free to watch 4 or more xterms with ease. If you don't need the 3D then just go with the 'nv' driver. Otherwise go all out with the latest 'xscreensavers' running in your root windows while you're trying to work :)
