I hear you, Brother!

My primary laptop is stuck at Mandrake 7.1. Kernel 2.2.19,
KDE 1.1.2. Can't seem to reach escape velocity to upgrade it.

It's easier to upgrade a desktop PC -- build the new system on a spare
disk (or even a spare box), and keep the old disk around as secondary
for a few months until you're sure you're done with it. You can't do
that on a laptop. Laptops only have one drive, and it's never big
enough for extra copies.

I can't afford to have the laptop down or partially nonfunctional
for an unknown duration, so I haven't upgraded it since 7.1.

Of course, that means my laptop, which gets plugged into all sorts of
networks in all sorts of unsecure environments, is the one machine I
have that isn't up to date on security patches. Sigh...

I'll probably buy a new laptop in another year, and the old one will
be Mandrake 7.1 forevermore.
