I'm not too awfully worried about hardware, since I'll be using pretty standard gear (laptop actually). I am most interested in software maintainability. I've always liked ports, which is why I've been considering Gentoo as well. I'm becoming less a fan of maintaining currency via binary packages, and the way I tend to organize and set up my systems, building from source tends to be easier and quicker even factoring in build times. Plus, just about everything (if not all) I need will run on FreeBSD, so I figured I might give it a shot on my next work pc.
