I just started playing with freevo that comes with my Mandrake 10.1 distribution. So far it's interesting looking, but I haven't been able to do anything useful with it yet.

On the other hand, I've had a ReplayTV for about two years, and have very good things to say about them. I now have three of them, and they "just work".

I've upgraded several drives in several different units. There are open source tools for doing things like upgrading the drives, creating a completely new drive and downloading the shows to your PC.

I've written a shell script that converts the downloaded mpg to a dvd iso for burning. Seems to work wonderfully.

There are good deals on many different models on Ebay. Including some of the early models that don't require activation.
