I'm always second guessing due to compile times, and the frequency and non-frequency of updates. Gentoo is great if you are running a server among similar CPU's. With this scenario, you can have a BINHOST and take advantage of faster cpu optimizations. I also like how Gentoo manages /etc config files. I know Mandrake (back in the day when it was Mandrake) would just overwrite the /etc files at times w/o backing up the original /etc config file. (yikees). At least I don't have to worry too much more about DEP H*ll when upgrading a package. (ie. Gnome or KDE update/release). I'm always trying out something new. And there are quite a few bleeding edge developers always trying to build with the latest & greates... ie. Beryl 3D desktop. The other thing neat about Gentoo, no need to reinstall or upgrade every 6 mos, as the upgrades are fished-out every day! Of course, with a binary Distro such as RedHat/Mandrake, I could save compile time, I would again, be stuck with old or security compromised libs. Dunno.. everything has a pro or con. -- Roger http://www.eskimo.com/~roger/index.html Key fingerprint = 8977 A252 2623 F567 70CD 1261 640F C963 1005 1D61 Thu May 3 09:28:46 PDT 2007 _______________________________________________ EUGLUG mailing list euglug@euglug.org http://www.euglug.org/mailman/listinfo/euglug
