Holy Cow!! is all I have to say.
Y'all rant a bit too much. There is this thing called
"AUTOMATIX" for Ubuntu. Everyone but Alan's wife would be just
fine using it.
I'd be cautious there. When I was running Kubuntu 6.06 my system went
buggy a few weeks after I installed Automatix. The most bothersome
aspect initially was misbehavior by Firefox after using Automatix to
install Swiftfox and a few updates of Firefox. I had also installed
seeral other packages via Automatix. But then I started getting really
serious issues that traced to dependency conflicts.
The system eventually got so buggy and I didn't have time to really
study the problem, so I I wiped version 6.06, installed Kubuntu Edgy,
and got a fresh start (and my urgent project done). A few weeks
later, the same pattern of problems began repeating. I hadn't a clue
until one of the developers I work with informed me emphatically that
Automatix was evil, that it forces installs despite dependency
conflicts.
I'd been wanting to try Mepis anyway, so I wiped Kubuntu and installed
Mepis. But I steered clear of Automatix. No more similar problems
(although my motherboard died a month later and my new one sports an
Intel duo-core processor, so I reinstalled Mepis once again.)
Far from definitive proof that Automatix does indeed force installs
despite dependency conflicts, but enough for me.
There is a denial on the Automatix site that it "forces" installs. But
my guy says it uses 'echo "y"' which has the same effect in context as
--force-yes. That's beyond my personal knowledge or understanding, but
it may mean something to others on this list.
Best regards,
Marbux
