Here is a great recent example of linux packet radio being used. The Twin Cities Marathon had a very nice support infrastructure, and the radio-friendly volunteers bridged their runner-location database to non-radio volunteers using a web interface over wifi... seems pretty complicated for a day-long event but is just a terrific example IMO... http://www.arrl.org/news/features/2008/03/01/2/?nc=1
