Lorraine, for anything above say 1 or 1.5Ghz processor, your clients may enjoy a media-center-type distribution (mythtv or similar?), or even a music-recording&editing-studio (dynebolic?). DIY boomboxes might be a fun project for the shop, what with ipods being all the standard these days -- a friend of mine has a nice car-audio system mounted on his bicycle, running off a 12V motorcycle battery -- one can imagine something similar for a portable gaming system or even a movie jukebox for off-grid or campouts, etc. For further ideas on recycling old "gems" or modern art into neat pc cases, see blogs like http://mini-itx.com/projects.asp -- there are a ton of homebrew case designs and custom-purpose PC's built into things, many of which demonstrate the use of linux as well. Home-automation and home-monitoring systems are another niche ripe for re-use of [hopefully reliable or at least failover-ready!] older hardware. A dedicated voip router, which could be sold to owners of quads and other multi-unit homes in the area...?
