It's absolutely essential that you keep up with security updates.
Otherwise you're inviting identity theft, carrying around
an attractive nuisance, though courts don't see it that way yet.
So long as your OS is still receiving security updates (isn't
EOL or abandoned), then you're welcome to ignore functionality
updates.
OTOH, sometimes a shiny new OS is just as good as a shiny
new toy, and the old OS doesn't leach toxic chemicals into
the landfill when you throw it out. (-:
That's my opinion, anyway.
