A month or so ago, I posted a question:
How do I hold on to my WP 8 on Linux, and yet
move into the 21st century -- update the LInux?
I absolutely love Linux, and I love WP. The
problem is that my current Linux system (KDE??) is old and does not
support wmv, or Facebook, or other new computer stuff.
People asked specifics about my system so, below I have listed
information regarding my WP, LInux etc. Here goes:

WP 8.0.0076 6-23-98
OS Linux 2.6.16.13-4-defaulti686
KDE 3.5.1 level "a"
CPU Intel Pentium 4 1.70 GHz
Ram 1 GB
HD 150 GB hard drive

Thanks for the help.

Someone else on this list may be able to speak to the issue better than I, but I shall just post a few thoughts here in case they are of any use ... this even without asking what distribution (of Linux) your have ...

Linux 2.6.16 ... the most current release according to <http://www.linuxhq.com/> is 2.6.37, which doesn't seem like a drastic jump to me? (2.6.0 was released in 2003, I believe).

And according to <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WordPerfect#WordPerfect_for_Linux> ...
WP 6.0 for Linux released in 1996
WP 8.0 for Linux released in 1998
WP 8.1 for Linux released in 1999
WP 9.0 for Linux released in 2000
... after that, having dropped support for most other systems with 1997, they seem to have focused on Windows, with W5 being their current release.

So there probably isn't any official answer to your question. However, there are probably some ways around it, one obviously being bite the bullet and move to OpenOffice, or maybe LyX (LyTex/Tex GUI), depending on your need and preference.

But another way to test this stuff out is to add the target OS (newer Linux) to the existing machine as a dual-boot and test WP there. If you do decide to do that, you may well have to add another hard drive, depending on how much space you have left on the current on ... fortunately, Linux is very good at that.

By the way, according to <http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/FAQ/Writer/DocumentManagement/Does_OpenOffice.org_support_WordPerfect_file_formats%3F>, current versions of OOo will open WP format files, but one cannot save them again as WP. So if you went the OOo route, you should be able to access all of your WP files.

Hope some of that helps
Regards
Fred James

PS: I am running 2.6.20.19 which came out in 2008, and the distro is Mandriva 2008.0, with a few updates for this and that, and Gnome 2.20
