I understand that point, and it's great if you buy them from Saft.
What I'm also curious about is whether or not second-hand ones can
be just as easily recycled. For instance someone on the Tradin' Post
has three pallets of govt surplus NiCds for sale $600.

Yep. For that I will basically have to arrange the shipping myself.
That means I need to find out what are the requirements for shipping
hazardous waste around the world and how to comply with them. I can
do this, but it's a major hassle. On the other hand if they last
27 years like they have for Jerry, Saft might have an office in this
country by the time it happens.

I don't think that would make a lot of sense. I'm further from the
US than France is, it would be better go direct or via Australia.
