I used this email also as a test Email for the EV list and want to give some
information about an EV car in Europe running on nicads SAFT.

Currently I have no EV-miles yet but last year I bought in France an 5000km
DC SEPEX Citroen Ax electrique ,slightly damaged but ,factory build with
Nicads 100Ah .
(4 Seats 995 Kg with battery ,load 300kg) reduction no clutch and gears
90km/h )

I had battery packs removed as they ( Nicad packs in polyetyleen boxes) were
rented.
I thought I could rent them in Belgium but they are to be bought($8000$)with
boxes and fittings;

Theoreticcaly they are to be recycled ;However at the dealers nobody nows
about what to do.

The polyethylene boxes give an excellent isolation for the floating 120v
system.
There are three boxes:

1:in front BOX before engine (forewheel traction): 6 saft 100ah cooling in
series
2:on top of engine :BOX2:   3 batteries
3:rear side of car :BOX 3:  11 batteries cooling 5 and cooling 6 in series

Each box has on one side a fuse  from FERRAZ 330V 130A
                                                  (170A 30 min)
                                                  (220A 5 min)
                                                  (2100A 80ms )
At the other side the same kind off fuse but this time its a  dummy
fuse/separator.
one fuse (+120V) and one dummy at the other end (-120 floating) are used to
put the car out of power to work on the electric circuitry.
I am trying to manufacture new metal + plastic boxes to replace these
polyethylene boxes who stayed in France
to "Down grade" the car to LEAD traction batteries,but last week I detected
perhaps a way to buy older Nicads SAFT 140AH in France ,so I am waiting a
bit.

The Ferraz fuses are dedicated for citroen and peugeot EV .I cannot find the
sockets (for the moment), which were very interesting as they had special
isolated cable clamps.(the security of EV is often dreadfull and deadly ! )


The coolant liquid of the batteries is common with the chopper for the SEPEX
DC Motor

liquid : PROCOR 3000 (antigel?)
protection -18�C
quality: demineralised or softened
capacity 12l
water pump 12 V
flow 600l/hour
overpressure: 0.3 Bar
radiator (rather bigger than you think as low level temperature needed : so
less efficiency)
electric ventilator 24 v running on 12 volts , starts at 30� Celcius and
stops at 25�C
expansion reservoir Stop is VERT( 0.3 BAR )with critical level at 53�Celcius
(?)

Direction of the Flow: the three separate battery boxes outlets go to the
top  of a small polyetyleen expansion
water box

Bottom of this box goes to the water pump.
Pressured output of the pump goes to the radiator in the front which is
cooled by wind flow normally or forced by ventilator. The cooled liquid
output cools first the big electronic chopper box which also contains the
computer ,DC-dc invertor 12 V 30A ,the normal and fast charger.
The output goes then to the three batteries-packs.

The Nicads needs top-filling with demineralised water (5 to 15 liter!!)at
regular intervals 10000km or when a red lamp indicates this (computer keeps
track of charge/discharge;there are some overflow outlets to  see if the
batteries are full (watch out some caustic soda NAOH ? comes out) The pack
cout a total of four central pipes 1+1 at front two packs and  two for the
bigpack at the rear .

(comment:You'll not believe what they charge you for this !.I think a small
watering box with pump as for the wind shield;could be a solution together
with tree overflow detector-reservoirs)

The engine is a LEROY SOMER SA13.3 (reverse of the clock  seen from
collector)
      DC with separated field

      - Cooling with separated ventilator 2 speed
      speed 1 always
      speed two with temp detector in windings at 85�C
      if temp rises to 120�c ten chopper  reduces current endafter tempdrop
to 110�C
      second temp detector already present in windings for repair;
      -MOTOR:
        P Nominal:11 kW  from 1600 to 5500
        Pmax     :20kW   from 1600 to 5500 rev/min
        max torque 127 mN 0 to 1600 rev/min
        max rev: 6700

        security 8000rev

        voltage core inductor 120V    200A for 5 min (20kw)
        voltage field 90 V nominal 10A
        4 brushes

        On board charger 2800W 230V 16A 50 Hz
        several profiles

1: 20A charge for 5 h = 100Ah automat limited in time if batterie is not
fully discharged
   + 5 A for another 20AH (to maintain battery to its maximum capacity)
     (in the manual there must be an error indicating 2 hours at 5 A
   the last top charge AH uses water which are added by the computer;
   once the computer added 5 full charges 5*20Ah = 100Ah the computer starts
automatically
    equalisation charge 2.
2: egalisation  charge
    this is an 20A normal charge and 3h at 5A
    (external box ELIT at repair can trigger this phase too.
3: Every 10000km or after adding water the start with ELIT
      starting from empty
      - a NORMAL charge 5h * 20A
      - a TOP charge of 5h * 10A
      - a pulsed charge during 72houres every 28 minutes(OFF) a pulsed
         current of 10A during 2 minutes(ON)

4: initialisation charge:
    when putting in a new battery pack the counters of the "Ah computer
counter" and the
    Saft Monobloc NiCad must be egalised.This mode is also started with ELIT
diagnostic system.
     - 10A during 15hours
     - 10 A pulsed during 2 minutes (ON) 28min OFF    , during 72 houres

5: FAST charge:At certain locations in certain towns:

    150A recharges 50% of capacity (dialogue between car computer and
charging station)

6: Exceptional charge or prelimineraly charge before real charge:
   When battery tension is between 10V and 80 Volts a small current is used
   when power is between 80 Volts and 105V a current of 10A during 12
minutes is used.

   (comments: This can be an indication that low voltage doesn't necessarely
damage Nicads.
               I think that the on board DC -DC converter keeps the 12 Volts
on the main battery(separated)
               and after month it has drained the traction battery.
               However the traction-pack is normally shut off after 105Volt
low.

Another time I write about the traction/regenerator control.



The situation of Ev is almost disparate in Europe nowadays except for small
EV in Germany and Austria,Swiss;
Only public services use electric cars.La Rochelle Town in France is an +++
exception here.
