I can ask an airplane mechanic(foreman) i got some concorde sla batteries
from
were 24v 42Ah at c1 rate I couldn't score the nicads they had, 24v also
they throw them out once a year or some time schedule good or not
i can get info monday on aircraft voltage and what they do on watering
did read Tim's ebay page right?
$1 each
so for 48v 34ah i'd need 40 each? weighing 132 pounds?
2 strings can do? 48v 68ah, 264 pounds?

Jay,

Do you know of analysis showing whether or not there are significant
amounts of Cadmium in the caustic? IE would it really be harmful to dump
the caustic?

What sort of process is involved in separating the metals? Is it
possible that Inmetco is making money on the cadmium and nickel, and
ripping people off by charging them for disposal?

Thanks,
John Foster

Subject: Nicad Disposal Options

Dear fellow Nicad-loving listers,

When not playing EV'er, my day job involves finding proper homes for all
sorts of garbage, so I wanted to make sure that we all know what to do
when these NiCd cells eventually die, because the cadmium that they
contain is hazardous when released into the environment, and should
never go to an incinerator or regular solid waste landfill. Unlike lead
acid batteries, the nicads do not have a positive scrap value, and there
is only one facility in the country that I know of as the ultimate
consumer of these cells; the International Metals Reclamation Company
(INMETCO) in Ellwood City, Pennsylvania.
http://www.inmetco.com/
I spoke with their rep this morning, and INMETCO will accept shipments
of dead flooded Nicads directly from individuals. The cost for
recycling is $0.45 per pound. The nickel, cadmium, and any steel
components are all recovered. The cadmium can go back into batteries
and cadmium-based pigments, and the nickel and steel winds up in
stainless steel manufacture. Plastic battery casings are commonly
recycled into the common black polypropylene lead acid battery casings,
but I'm not sure if this is 'the case' with INMETCO.
Shipments can go direct, FOB INMETCO, or to one of their three
consolidation points, 1) Wade Environmental Industries, Battery
Division, Atco, New Jersey; 2) U.S. Filter Recovery Services, Inc.,
Roseville, Minnesota; and 3) Kinsbursky Brothers Supply, Inc., Anaheim,
California. From these consolidation points the batteries are shipped to
INMETCO.

Shipping costs should not be any more than we're paying to get the cells
in the first place, because under the EPA's Universal Waste Rule,
batteries destined for recycling are not subject to most hazardous waste
transportation regulations.
When you have NiCd cells to dispose of, please contact one of the
consolidators or INMETCO directly. INMETCO requires advance approval
for inbound shipments and self-delivery, but they will accept prepayment
over the phone via credit card to simplify the transaction for
individuals.

I'm still awaiting a response from SAFT, since they also have a
recycling office. Contact info there is as follows: ... Saft America
Inc., 711 Industrial Boulevard PO Box 1886 Valdosta Georgia 31601 Tel :

Clearly you aren't familiar with military aviation maintenance
requirements. I've worked with folks that fly/maintain Predator UAVs.
Every 360 hours of operation they disasemble the motor, clean it, check
for damage/wear, and reassemble it.
Since these typically fly missions lasting 20 hours or so, it's possible
to hit the 360 hour point every three weeks.

Most jets and helicopters go a bit longer than 360 hrs, but they still end
up being stripped down several times a year. Compared to that, spending a
few minutes every month or so checking battery levels is trivial.
In fact each base has a shop full of people who specialize in battery
maintenance.

I believe I've heard this song before. Let's see ...

Ah, here it is. Popular Science Magazine, February 1971.

"The Voltair ... promises a real breakthrough in performance: Tri-polar lead
cobalt batteries; series-traction DC motor; solid-state control unit; a
patented fuel cell which trickle-charges the batteries at a constant rate.

"These achievements come out of many years of experimental work by Robert R.
Aronson and his company, Electric Fuel Propulsion, Inc. ...

"When can you buy a Voltair? Soon. Aronson plans to make 300 EFP Electrics
by June (1971); they'll sell for $10,000. The Voltair will come after
that."

Thirty-four years later, I'm still waiting.

I've said this many times before. Bob Aronson is one of the old-timers of
the EV business, and he deserves respect for his perseverence. But aside
from a small fleet of grossly overweight Renault conversions over 3 decades
ago, I've seen more press releases than products roll out of his shop. I'd
dearly love to see that change, and I wish him the best, but I'm not holding
my breath nor am I writing any checks to him.

Hi everyone,

I've been a bad boy.... I haven't read any of the the EVDL
digests for days....and of course now that I do sit down and
start reading through them, I find that a bunch of lucky
EV-ers have managed to score military surplus nicads!
Aaarrgghh!! That's the price of ignoring the EVDL... ;-)

I'm currently waiting for a new "toy" to arrive here,
yes, I'm the guy who bought Carl Vogel's Siemens system!
The price even with shipping is a significant saving
over buying it here in Euroland ( is that crazy or what?
Made in Germany, was shipped to USA, now is going to be
shipped to the UK! )

So Mellow Yellow is going high-voltage AC !!

Now of course this brings me to the problem of batteries.
I have 240 V worth of Dynasty PbA AGMs ( 50 Ah ), but some of them
are abused and on their way out...
And the whole lot is rather heavy. This is the same pack that was in
the truck in a 120 V buddy-paired configuration, so I know the
pack will physically fit in, but it's right at the limit of what
the little truck can handle.

240V of Exide Orbitals will also fit in, ( same weight ), I'd just
need to build a new holddown frame for them
( why do they have to be 5mm longer than Optimas??? grrr )

I've just got a nice shiny PFC30 from Rich Rudman, and so
far 13 Rudman regs. ( Rich, I may need another 7 soon!! )
So a charging system is no problem.

The question is... is anyone in Europe buying some of these
BB600 nicads? Would you like someone else to do a group buy
with ( hint ), to help reduce shipping costs?
Nicads would be a really nice addition to an AC drive system!

I don't need to import i already have Saft nicad at source ;^)

Richard it would be cheaper/better for you buying true EV batteries directly
from France:

the STM5-140 (probably to heavy at 240V) are all sold out but i have a
contact for second hand healthy (each controlled by discharge/charge test
for 100Ah garanted) STM5-100MRE modules (water cooled)
asking for it you should have electrical, cooling and watering connectors
with them.
Price was about 1/4 to 1/3 new price (350 euros)
40 modules will be about 520kg for 240V 24kwh reserve at 1C discharge, even
with half life on them (certainly more) still about 1000 cycles at 50% DOD.
With an "heavy foot" 240wh/km your range should still be a strong 100km :^)

contact me off list for more details.

Hi EV Listers,

ProEV's Kokam powered Electric Imp has won it's first two autocrosses.

The first autocross wasn't perfect. We were stuck in a class with no
oppersition and we only completed two runs.

The second race was better. They classified us as D modified and we had
some ICE Cars to beat up on! I managed an entertaining spin on the first run
but eventually did a respectable time.

Write-ups are on the website. There are also Amp, RPM, Torque, Voltage
graphs from the first autocross and In-car videos from the second.

Have fun,

 Hi All;

This posting, buried in Nicad 600 postings , maybe THAT'S why it went by
sorta unnoticed. Seems that Victor is on to a good thing with Ultra Caps to
smooth out current surges, help you with the Peukart effect. Are these
things affordable, sounds like EVery EV could pack some away aboard, since
they don't need any maintenence, can mount in any dry position.Last the life
of the car. Gees! What more could ya want? OK what are the downsides? Cost?
Made with Unobtainium? Are these capaciter(s) very voltage fussy? Sounds
like an answer to an EV'ers dream. 16.7F 400 volt Cap. How much, and size,
weight? Vic, do ya sell these?

This kit would make a wicked three wheeler based on a bug rear end. The kit you are asking about contains just the bare-bones essentials, which
is as follows: Motor/plate adapter,20' of #00ga wire with crimp lugs,
ALLTRAX controller model#4855, 0-5k pot box, amp meter with shunt(50 mv at
500 amps),0-50vdc volt meter,12 volt 200 amp(continuous) contactor (500amp

Hello,

Greetings from solar car land to announce its long awaited arrival.

This Sunday (March 13th) between 12:00 and 14:00 I'll be taking the solar car
for a spin on Lake Simcoe, by the marina near the ferry to Georgina Island.

To get there from Toronto, take hwy 48 to Virginia, turn left on Virginia blvd,
turn right at the end, you will see the Marina on the left side.

To my knowledge this will be the first time ever someone dare to drive a solar
car on ice. So, we called it "Ice Event". We are pushing the envelope of what
XOF1 stands for. As you can imagine the bellow freezing temperature alone
presents a great challenge to any electric vehicle. Now, ad low light
conditions of the winter months and an ice road (Frozen lake) and you got a
recipe for an incredible challenge for any vehicle.

This first drive will be a trial test drive to learn more about the XOF1 solar
car, the car won't be painted nor have any markings at this time. The official
"Ice Event' will be scheduled to take place a couple of weeks later, weather
permitting.

Hope to see you there.

Kindest regards,

turn right at the end, you will see the Marina on the left side.

This is not what I envisioned when I read the term "solar-powered EV", but you
might get enogh charge for 10mi a day in the summer. Wouldn't work well on
Lawrence's ElectraVan in cloudy SF, and probably not something you'd want to
drive at freeway speeds! Currently nearing $5K

How about adding Dual motor configurations for the Zilla's? (Also, some hints on cross referencing motor model #'s to the common mentioned "8 inch ADC", etc...)

I would really like to find good numbers for a Ford F-250 drag and area.
Using the current "non aero small truck", and increasing the frontal area to 30 sq ft gives some interesting numbers.
240v of T-145's and a Z2k)
Range at 10mph is over 1400 miles!
Only 140 miles at 60mph though.

Would also be nice if there was some indication in the resulting charts to indicate that the column is over-reving the motor.

Peter,

I went by the Surplus place today and it is empty! just some 55 gal metal drums
and the building. I talked to somebody down the road who has a off road buggy
business and he said that the owner died a couple months ago and the wife never
really liked the business and sold all the merchandize. No word as to who. So
that's it for the used nicads, connectors and boxes that were there.

Had a recent melt down at work.
Golf cart repair tech came out and drilled a small hole in the left overs of a
melted post. Then drove a self tapping screw with a replacement lug on it. Melt
down occurred due to loose cable which became over heated during charging.

Hi,

I'm ready to buy new tires for my Jeep, as the one's I have now are rated 1874 lbs. @ 35 PSI and always look under inflated even though I have them at ~37 PSI.

I'm considering Pirelli Scorpion STR A tires:
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Pirelli&tireModel=Scorpion+STR+A&vehicleSearch=false&partnum=275R5SCORSTROWLXL&fromCompare1=yes

The reason why I'm thinking of using these is because they have a max rating of 2094 lbs. @ 50 PSI. I've noticed that most tires in my size (P225/75/R15) are rated to 35 PSI, and few in the 44-50 max PSI range. I'm under the assumption that having a tire with a higher max pressure is a good thing (I can pump them up higher for less rolling resistance)?

There was talk recently about using tires that have a certain type of belt (poly?). The description for these Pirelli tires says:

"Scorpion STR tires feature twin, high- tensile steel belts reinforced with polyamide to provide strength and durability on top of a two-ply polyester cord body that helps cushion the ride."

So does the composition of these tires sound ok? It would stink to buy new tires that have worse rolling resistance than my current ones.

I also am still looking at the Toyo 800 ultra tires that Roger and others mentioned a while back, but they are rated 1874 lbs. (and I think 44 PSI). Wouldn't the Pirelli tires with the higher load and pressure rating be better?

Thanks,

Have no idea how to change the javascript to allow multiple motors, so I'm open
to suggestion. As for cross-referencing, the motor page needs to get some of
that info.

I don't have much data on large trucks and cars, since they aren't the most
common choices in terms of efficiency, so you've got to plug in those values
yourself.

The top speed section is as close to an over-rev column as I can get.

Wow, that sucks. That place was a Mecca since George Radkliff up here in Phx
died. Makes you kind of wonder tho, who "renders" out the salvage guys, lol.
I just did an estate cleanup of a guy that worked for an electronics company
here in town, saw a lot of me in that place. Scary. Componants, test
equipment and goodies all over the place. Anyway, not quite the end for AC
starting Nicads in AZ tho, I still have a few hundred to sell as soon as I
have the time to sort and check them. The ones Tim is selling are the best
deal out there right now on aircraft nicads, would advise stocking up.

Pressure and load ratings have little to do with rolling resistance. I have heard from Goodyear that it is generally better to run at about 50% rated load for the tire, and of course higher pressure in a given tire will roll better but the ratings are not significant. A great tire at 35 psi will outperform a bad tire at 45 psi.

What you are looking for is a tire that has Silca in the compound. Usually these have makings on the sidewall that say "Saves Fuel" and "Low Co2 emissions" or some such.

This may be helpful as well:

I called Michelin a while ago and they said that their LRR tires have their so-called XSE technology. Those are the two models that have XSE.

When I was researching tires for the D, I also contacted Toyo and they confirmed that the Ultra-800's were their lowest RR tire. Of course, it is impossible to get comparisons between brands, except that I noticed in a recent Consumer Reports that they are starting to include rolling resistance in their evaluations.

I do not think that there is a direct correlation between rolling resistance and treadwear. Bridgestone Potenza RE-92, for example, are very low RR but are notorious for wearing out. The ones on my Insight are nearly finished at 70K km (42K miles). Great for fuel consumption, lousy for traction and any other measure of handling.

I was tempted to get the Goodyears or Toyos, but ended up with Michelin X-One's for sentimental reasons: French tires for a French car... sorry, 'Freedom' car.

Hope this helps

10 miles a day is perhaps optimistic.
Given the details in the listing, I'd be surprise if it gets much more
than 12 AH a day charging on just solar power. Assuming the standard 90%
columbmetric (sp?) effeciency, this works out to about 10-11 amps useable
power at 108V nominal...
maybe 4 miles?

Damn! Well my guess is that it got sold to someone else in Tucson or
Phoenix, there was a LOT of stuff there, motors, generators, trucks, etc.
typical government surplus junk.
Wouldn't be cost effective to hual it very far, at least not for another
junk dealer.
