Bozeman Daily Chronicle Electric car shown off at Gallatin
Gateway School By NICK GEVOCK,Chronicle Staff Writer
GALLATIN GATEWAY -- After months of work to convert a small
pickup into an electric-powered vehicle, Ken Bruwelheide still
had to run a test before his class actually tried it out.
So the Montana State University technology education professor
snuck into the lab the night before and turned the key. But the
little Chevy S10 pickup was dead, and it demanded a lot of
detective work to find the culprit.
"It took us a whole month to figure out why it wouldn't work,"
Bruwelheide told Gallatin Gateway sixth-, seventh- and
eighth-grade students Tuesday. "It was one little wire."
Gateway technology teacher Mike Coon had asked Bruwelheide to
bring the electric vehicle, an MSU research demonstration
project, to the school. The goal was to teach kids how technology
like that develops.
A key to any technology project, just like all science, is
troubleshooting, Bruwelheide said.
He and his MSU students used a basic procedure of going through
every possible element to pinpoint the problem.
"When something doesn't work, you've got to go back through all
the steps and figure out why," he said. "Everybody does it."
That's the message Coon wants his students to hear, that
problem-solving and overcoming obstacles are key steps in the
development of technology.
Although they're not nearly as technical as the college-level
designs, his middle-school students work on robotic arms and
other projects and face problems all the time.
"We're basically going to be tackling the same things that he and
his class were, but on a smaller scale," Coon said.
The 1996 truck used in the MSU project had originally been headed
for the junk heap because of engine troubles. But Bruwelheide got
ahold of it in 2002 and he and his students stripped it down,
removing the engine, exhaust system and other parts related to
its conventional gas operation.
Then they installed 24 car batteries and an electric motor.
Finally, they added a vacuum system for the brakes, and a heating
element to warm up the cab to make it drivable.
Bruwelheide still drives it around to show it off.
The truck can travel about 60 miles when fully charged, going
about 30 mph, although it can go faster. However, traveling much
faster than 60 mph can put a strain on the brakes, which are
already worked hard because the vehicle is heavy with so many
batteries, Bruwelheide said.
The limited distance the rig can go prompted Bruwelheide to add
solar panels last fall, which he estimates add about a third more
distance on sunny days by maintaining the charge.
Electric vehicles could be viable transportation for most
commuters, because the average American drives 18 miles round
trip every day, he said.
The vehicle is "cool," eighth-grade student Tom Hargrove said.
But as a young man partial to speed, he wouldn't want one.
"It would have to be faster for me," he said.

Texans pushing hybrid cars with $1 million pilot project
The city of Austin, Texas plans to earmark $1 million to give a
cash grant of $1000 to the first thousand people to purchase a
plug-in hybrid vehicle. Plug-in hybrids are similar in design to
commercial hybrids such as the Toyota Prius, but have the ability
to run purely on electrical power. The city also plans to promote
renewable energy. - Staff writers

Los Altos joins cities that are buying hybrid vehicles
GRANT HELPS CUT COST OF PURCHASING CAR
By Kimra McPherson Mercury News
Los Altos soon will add a hybrid vehicle to its pool of 15 city
cars.
The city council approved the purchase of the Honda Civic earlier
this month. It will be the first hybrid in the city fleet, City
Manager Phil Rose said.
``It's a slow move,'' he said. ``A small move for the
environment.''
The city received a $2,000 grant from the Bay Area Air Quality
Management District to help offset the cost of a hybrid car, Rose
said. That brought the price -- $22,950 -- within the range the
city would have paid for non-hybrid vehicles.
Los Altos Hills, which received a similar grant, voted to replace
its town car with a hybrid Ford Escape SUV in October. Other
Peninsula cities also are adding hybrids to their fleets: Palo
Alto has a Toyota Prius in its 650-vehicle pool, in addition to
about 70 vehicles fueled by natural gas and several more that run
on biodiesel. Mountain View bought a Prius for its 250-car pool
last year.
``We're trying to move that direction, into some of the
higher-efficiency vehicles,'' said Gregg Hosfeldt, the business
manager for Mountain View's public works department.
Several years ago, Los Altos received a grant to use electric
cars in the city fleet, Rose said. The city had to return the
cars when the grant ran out, he said, and chose not to purchase
more.
The hybrids seemed like a better idea, he said.
``We're trying to see how well they work in our car pool,'' Rose
said. ``If they're successful, then yeah, sure, we'd buy
more.''
Rose said he wasn't sure exactly when the car would be ready for
the road: Los Altos is waiting for a white Civic to be available
so that it will match the rest of the city's cars.

Raser's Symetron Technology to Power a Formula Race Car in a
Demonstration on the Grand Prix Course in Monaco
Wednesday March 23, 2:09 pm ET
PROVO, Utah--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 23, 2005--Raser (News) will
demonstrate its advanced motor and controller technology in a
Formula Lightning car driven on the Grand Prix race course in
Monaco as part of the Electric Vehicle Symposium (EVS-21) held
this year in Monaco April 2-6, 2005.
Monaco is the home of the world-famous "Grand Prix." Formula race
cars are normally powered by large, high-performance combustion
engines. In the Monaco demonstration, a small 150-pound
Symetron(TM) electric motor alone will drive the Formula race
car.
The Symetron(TM) motor powering this race car is about the same
dimensions as the electric motor in the Toyota Prius hybrid
vehicle which combines an electric motor with a combustion
engine. Raser's motor technology, however, will drive a Formula
race car entirely on its own, delivering 420 ft.-lbs. of torque,
and is capable of 500 hp without the help of a combustion engine.
Participating in the event will be dignitaries from the country
of Monaco, the Electric Vehicle Symposium and international
media.
Raser will release performance results at the Monaco show that
may prove Symetron(TM) to be the most powerful electric motor and
controller technology available for hybrid vehicles today.
Raser VP Marketing David West commented, "This breakthrough means
we have an electric motor technology powerful enough to replace
the combustion engine in just about any vehicle."
Brent M. Cook, CEO of Raser Technologies, said, "Delivering this
high power from the reliable and affordable AC induction platform
is a significant achievement. Some hybrid automakers are
considering motors that require a more expensive manufacturing
process and costly rare earth materials such as neodymium.
Raser's high performance is achieved by innovative design, not by
adding expensive materials."
"Application of this technology will help make hybrid vehicles
more affordable by reducing manufacturing costs," added D.J.
Priano, sr. vice president of Raser Technologies. "The attainment
of this performance level from AC induction technology also sends
a powerful signal to the automobile industry that
high-performance motors can be affordable.
"In addition, Symetron(TM)-enhanced motors may be brought to
market faster in high volumes because they can be produced in
existing AC induction manufacturing facilities," continued
Priano.
The company is also planning on demonstrating the Formula car
with Raser's new Symetron(TM) motor technology at the SAE World
Congress in Detroit, April 11-16 and later this year in
California and on the Bonneville Salt Flats, home of several
world land speed records.
Additional information about the company's participation in
EVS-21 and recent technology developments can be found on the
company Web site: http://www.rasertech.com/monaco.html. About
Raser Technologies Formed in 2003, Raser Technologies believes
that its pending patents and proprietary intellectual property
cover breakthrough technologies. Raser's Symetron(TM)
technologies more efficiently harness electrical energy in
electric motors, controllers, alternator and generator
technologies. Application of Symetron(TM) generally requires
simple changes to existing products, but yields significant
increases in power, performance and efficiency without the use of
exotic materials. Further information on Raser Technologies Inc.

No; both are magnetically coupled. As we've said many times, a DC motor
*is* and AC motor -- but with a commutator added.
And a commutator is just a switch -- a *big* switch! It may be crude,
but it can handle 1000 amps at least long enough to get you down a drag
strip.
In contrast, an AC motor's inverter is also just a switch. A very
complicated, fragile switch. Exceed its ratings for even a fraction of a
second, and it dies a violent death.
So, the main reason we see 1/2-megawatt DC drives, but not 1/2-megawatt
AC drives in our EVs is that no one can afford an inverter that will
hold together long enough at that power level to win races.

Anderson goes after loan money
By: Lindsey Jamison Staff Reporter

ANDERSON, Ind. (NLI) - An Anderson company owes the city over a
million dollars from an overdue loan. Electric Vehicle
International, an electric and hybrid car manufacturing company,
borrowed the money in 1997 with the promise that it would create
300 new jobs.
The five-year-old company closed its doors in November. Now
Anderson wants its money back. Anderson officials are petitioning
bankruptcy officials for the money. They claim that the company
defaulted on the loan because the new jobs were never created.
A city attorney said that William Hardacre, CEO of Electric
Vehicle International, could be held personally responsible for
up to $400,000 because he gave a personal guarantee on the loan.

Car that runs on compressed air
Wednesday, March 30, 2005 Posted: 1314 GMT (2114 HKT)
The pneumatic electrical hybrid vehicle (PHEV) runs on compressed
air.
(CNN) -- A Korean company has created a car engine that runs on
air.
The engine, which powers a pneumatic-hybrid electric vehicle
(PHEV), works alongside an electric motor to create the power
source.
The system eliminates the need for fuel, making the PHEV
pollution-free.
Cheol-Seung Cho, of Energine Corporation, told CNN the system is
controlled by a computer inside the car, which instructs the
compressed-air engine and electric motor what to do.
The compressed air drives the pistons, which turn the vehicle's
wheels.
The air is compressed using a small motor, powered by a 48-volt
battery, which powers both the air compressor and the electric
motor.
Once compressed, the air is stored in a tank, Cho said.
"The compressed air is used when the car needs a lot of energy,
such as for starting up the car and acceleration. The electric
motor comes to life once the car has gained normal cruising
speed."
He said the system was relatively simple to manufacture and could
be easily adapted to any conventional engine system.
"You could say our car has two hearts pumping. That is, we have
separate motors running at different times, both at the time when
they can perform most efficiently."
Cho also said the system could reduce the cost of vehicle
production by about 20 percent, because there was no need to
build a cooling system, fuel tank, spark plugs or silencers.
Cho hoped to see PHEVs on streets in the near future.
Peter Kemp, editor of "Petroleum Intelligence Weekly," told CNN
that one of the biggest challenges for the invention was
persuading the general public to embrace it.
"For this invention to take off, you'd need to get the backing of
a major manufacturer. The major manufacturers that are looking at
hybrid motors at the moment are looking at fuel cells -- battery
with a gasoline diesel combination," he said.
Kemp said Toyota, which has released a hybrid car, had sold about
150,000 of the environmentally friendly model worldwide.
"But that is over several years. There is a lot of demand for
that car but that is the only one that is really available and
nobody knows whether Toyota is making any money out of it."

Cool Cruisin' By Aneto Okonkwo
Tuesday, last updated March 29, 2005 1:19 AM
You listen to the latest podcast from your iPod headphones (which
are permanently glued to your ears) and you sport the latest,
most tech-advanced cell phone. Your Wi-Fi tablet PC connects you
to the Internet wherever you go.
But wait, what is that youre riding? A bike?
Oh, come on that is so last century.
Transportation on campus has varied widely over the course of
Stanfords history. Leland Stanford Jr. rode a bike, and in the
1970s a leading landscape designer, Thomas D. Church, sculpted
the campus into a peripatetic paradise.
Today, Stanford is one of the most expansive campuses in the
world, and the pioneering atmosphere and wide bike paths have set
the stage for a variety of options in transportation.
Not content with merely pedaling a bike or strutting to class,
some Stanford students are using the latest in innovative
personal transportation technology. From electric scooters to
Segways, students are considering important factors such as
speed, comfort and price.
Juston Johnson, a junior, was one of the early adopters of the
electric scooter on campus. Johnson paid $250 on eBay for a
scooter that only required infrequent charges and allowed him to
cruise along at 17 m.p.h. while standing up.
After freshman year, I went through four cheap bicycles, Johnson
said. The pedals would fall off, or I would bend the frames and
the tires. The speed, convenience and relatively low price of the
scooter made it an attractive choice.
Ironically, it seems that often the most fit on campus are the
ones who choose to use alternative forms of transportation.
I think that innovation is spreading among the athletes fastest,
said Johnson, who is on the wrestling team. After wrestling
practice, I was too tired to ride my bike uphill.
Junior Gerald Commissiong, a member of the football team, shares
Johnsons sentiment. Commission drives a $1,600 electric golf
cart.
I broke my leg playing football and in the long run it would have
cost me more to rent a golf cart than to buy one, Commissiong
said.
The convenience and comfort of his electric vehicle make it
easier for Commissiong to get to classes and events, and he can
bring friends along for the ride.
Now that I live off campus, I can drive to school and get the
golf cart and it saves me a lot of money on parking passes,
added Commissiong.
Another user of innovative transportation on campus is sophomore
Fahad Al-Saud. Al-Saud operates a $4,000 Segway, the first
two-wheeled, self-balancing, electric transportation device to
use dynamic stabilization technology. Al-Saud first purchased the
vehicle to remedy a major back problem and now enjoys gliding
around at 12 m.p.h. without having to worry about bending his
back or balancing.
The Segway was something new and something different that
demonstrated my original personality, Al-Saud said. It makes
life much easier, it cannot be stolen because it is activated by
a magnet and no one can even stand on it when it is off.
Many companies like Segway are catering to the burgeoning college
market. Stanfords own Alec Stuart recently began his own
entrepreneurial efforts to cater to this techie niche. Stuart, a
graduate student in Mechanical Engineering and Management
Sciences, markets the E-Glide Powerboard, an electric skateboard.
Stuarts skateboard can be controlled by a wired or wireless
trigger and accelerates from zero to 21 m.p.h. in four seconds.
I thought of the idea as a new product to develop and did some
research and found that they were already being manufactured in
China and decided to buy a shipment and try and sell them on
campus, Stuart said. It feels like you are snowboarding to
class and rides like a normal skateboard except that you are
always going down hill.

Millbrook emissions tests prove Connaught Type-D Hybrid
30th March 2005
Tests conducted at the Vehicle Emissions Laboratory (VEL) at
Millbrook Proving Ground recently have confirmed the viability of
the British hybrid sports car developer Connaughts
petrol/electric hybrid system. The tests demonstrated an overall
reduction in CO2 emissions of almost 15% over the performance of
a regular petrol engine.
The Connaught prototype was tested in both standard and hybrid
configurations and at two inertia classes the standard inertia
class for a Ford Mondeo (the test engine currently installed in
the Connaught Type-D) and the inertia class based on the proposed
weight of the Connaught Type-D. The range of CO2 emissions
recorded results from varying set-ups of the hybrid vehicles
energy management system, for example, differing speeds and load
conditions. This gave an overall improvement range of between
5.9% and 14.9%.
Tim Bishop Connaughts vehicle engineering director, said: "For
the purpose of these tests we used a Ford Mondeo petrol engine,
explains Bishop. "The Connaught engine, with bespoke strategies
and calibration, will include a unique fast warm up feature with
highly efficient water and oil heat transfer characteristics.
High compression, ceramic crowned pistons, variable valve timing,
low friction/low torque fluctuation for stop/start operation and
electrically heated catalysts will all contribute to further
energy saving beyond that shown in the official European
Emissions (NEDC) test cycle."
Further improvements to the hybrid system for start of production
will comprise a digital motor and power flow controller enabling
intelligent and adaptive control of the motor and energy systems,
the inclusion of high efficiency next generation super capacitor
and a revised motor drive system.
The Connaught hybrid system is the brainchild of Tim Bishop and
Tony Martindale and has to date received almost half a million
pounds worth of funding from the Energy Saving Trust with 17
patents pending on its technology.
The hybrid system will be fitted into a Connaught Type-D sports
coup, which features the first ever V10 hybrid engine and will
deliver 140mph, 0-60mph in 6.2s, 42mpg and genuine 2+2+ seating
configuration, while still complying with ultra-low emissions
targets set for 2010. A 48V electric motor assists the petrol
engine, while Super Capacitors provide extra power to the
electric motor and Regenerative braking pre-charges the system in
preparation for the next acceleration
Production of the Type-D is due to start in 2006, with prices
starting at around 35,000.

Sibal unveils Indian electric car Reva in Monaco
[Technology News] Bangalore, April 4 : Science and Technology
Minister Kapil Sibal Monday launched India's first electric car
Reva in Monaco, located off the Mediterranean coast.
The next-generation electric vehicle (EV), manufactured by
Bangalore-based Reva Electric Car Company Ltd (RECC) in
collaboration with automobile designer Dilip Chhabria and
Simputer developer Encore Software, is a two-seat roadster with a
range of 200 km per charge and a speed of 120 km an hour.
According to a company release here, unveiling the electric car
for the European market, Sibal stressed the need for global
collaboration to make EV technology viable the world over.
"Reva's new concept car is a technical marvel that promotes
alternative fuel technology in India and overseas. With global
warming, congestion and pollution rising the world over, it
becomes incumbent upon us to support and embrace such
technologies," Sibal said.
Lauding the company for designing and developing India's first
and only electric car, Sibal said such eco-friendly vehicles
would contribute significantly to the environment once they gain
wider acceptance for on-road transportation.
"The world is aware of the need to preserve the environment. And
that will be one of the main challenges of this century. Research
and development initiatives by companies like Reva are making a
headway in achieving this goal by revolutionising transportation
in India and putting it on the world map," Sibal said.
The car is fitted with a "wireless tablet", an embedded appliance
that integrates into a high-resolution single touch-screen
display system with dashboard functions such as speed,
state-of-charge, range and critical sensor inputs.
"The new concept car has been developed to showcase Reva and
India's expertise in developing future EV technologies as a
long-term solution to global pollution and transportation
problems," RECC deputy chairman Chetan Maini said.
RECC is a joint venture between the Maini Group and the US-based
AEV LLC.
Reva cars are available in India and marketed in Britain as
G-Wiz. It is also being test-marketed in the US, Malta, Japan,
Sri Lanka, Cyprus, Norway and other European countries.

EVLN(The burgeoning electric skateboard and longboard market)-long
[The Internet Electric Vehicle List News. For Public EV
informational purposes. Contact publication for reprint rights.]
--- {EVangel}
http://www.kntimes.com/travel/fullstory0305-status-1-newsID-703.html
Given the frenetic buzz over the burgeoning electric skateboard
and longboard market today's leading-edge extreme sports
products its easy to understand why several companies are
battling it out for board supremacy. And these turf wars are good
news for customers because the price is dropping and the
selection of new and interesting board models is increasing every
day.
Thanks to some hard work and the fluidity of domestic and
international contacts, starting in September of 2004 we will
offer the consumer a chance to select just the right board from a
multitude of models, styles and prices and purchase it easily and
directly from us on-line.
As a relative newcomer to extreme sports, you might choose a
less-expensive option such as the Chinese-manufactured Raptor or
Exkate. A similar model, is already selling extensively in Great
Brittain, and following some patent disputes here in the U.S., it
finally appears ready for prime time on American pavement.
Several versions are in the works in chinese manufacturing
complexes. However due to the patent problems, it appears that
some manufacturers will be eliminated from the market. It's even
possible some could rely on sales of tethered models in the US
with a focus on performance and value.
But if you are experienced and ready for the granddaddy of
electric skateboards, step on up to the top of the line Exkates,
already used and enjoyed by professional extreme sports
enthusiasts and skateboarders all over the world. This board is
available now and was shown in this Summer's movie the "The Big
Bounce' with Owen Wilson. Its not cheap and may well be the most
expensive electric skateboard on the market with a starting price
of $999, but you have never (and may never again) try a machine
as tight as this. The hand-held, wireless remote is absolutely
flawless, works well in any conditions and makes this board stop
on a dime. Long-lasting batteries keep it going for miles and
miles and can be easily recharged, and the motor-braking system
is unique to the market.
Exkate will also offer an electric skateboard that is fully hand
remote, but will not have the speed and handling of other models.
By October of this fall, Exkate and other licensees project they
will have several hand remote models available. As low as $249
all the way up to the high speed grand-daddy at $999+.
Sharper image, Brookstones, and several TV/Website/Infomercial
companies will sell through the Christmas season. The companies
hope to wet the appetite of the public this Christmas season
with the hottest new inexpensive entrant into the market.
Call 1-800-659-8731 for more information.
All board designs offered for sale represent cutting-edge
developments in electrical, remote-operated and compact vehicles.
These are the only electric skateboards in the world to offer
truly effective remote operation, a necessity for rider safety.
Slide4less buys and tests boards before reselling, and screens
out overseas models that dont meet the grade.
Motorized boards will likely become the worlds most advanced
vehicles with innovations that rival any other vehicle, says
Steve Steinberg of Slide4less. They are inherently dangerous,
but sophisticated acceleration, braking and board control are key
to making these machines effective for extreme sports
enthusiasts.
Steinberg notes that riders assume substantial risks with
motorized boards, as with any other extreme sport. (Could that be
a factor in the boards wildly expanding popularity? Decide for
yourself.)
Remote, hands-free boards require a unique frequency and a
handset system which uses the rider as the exclusive antennae in
an attempt to eliminate interference, which can jeopardize a
rider's ability to maintain balance and control, he explained.
Given this, Steinberg predicts that these extreme machines will
offer a higher level of fun and excitement and the incredible
precision-crafted electronics make them a reality for serious
riders and extreme individuals.
Stock Exkate boards feature a cruising range of 12 miles on a
single battery charge, with custom, high-power Lithium battery
packs in development, but still a ways off. These boards offer an
out-of-box, blistering top speed of 22 miles per hour.
These are the only vehicles in the world to give you a functional
and safe wireless remote throttle and braking system, right at
your fingertips, says Slide4less partner Darren Romar. These
skateboards are designed to emulate the feel and responsiveness
that snowboarders and surfers love. This is an extreme sport that
does not require waves, snow, wind or hills. People in the
flatlands of the Midwest can have just as much fun on these
boards as those living in hilly Sausalito, Calif. Maybe even
more!
Powerboards are one of the most environmentally friendly vehicles
available on the market, with strikingly silent operation and
zero emissions. It is snowboarding with no lift line,
wakeboarding without a boat and skateboarding without your feet
ever touching the ground. You just step on and accelerate! With
the X-24 motor specially built to suit the powerboard, you can
blast away to top speed in under four seconds. The extreme torque
will easily pull you and a friend up the steepest hills, and the
revolutionary longboard truck eliminates speed wobble while
providing for an astonishing 10-foot turning radius. The unique
bushings are formulated for the powerboard to absorb road shock
while keeping you in firm control via the wireless hand
controller.
Now we're doing some testing of new boards with professional
skateboarder Richie DeLosada and his son. Richie is one of the
few extreme athletes who has been riding these boards almost as
long as we have. There are some new entries on the horizon and
Exkate is facing some new competition. The market could be on the
verge of bringing the price down for the product, so stay tuned!
All new powerboard models and also pre-owned/refurbished boards
are now offerred for less. Some companies will carry
natural-color decks and highly customized board styles including
black, white and blue with blue tires; black, white and red with
red tires; and natural wood with either red or blue tires.
Almost all of these electric skateboards can be easily maneuvered
through a crowd, yet can attain very high speeds. These are
cutting-edge, hand-made electric vehicles with no expense spared.
All parts are engineered and machined specifically for the board
and not adapted from existing skateboard and electric vehicle
parts.
You can test ride an electric skateboard for free! Contact us for
more information. And most importantly Have Fun!
If you have questions about electric skateboards, call
1-800-659-8731.
WARNING: These electric skateboards are designed to be
high-speed, extreme machines and should be operated with extreme
care. Interference from overhead high-voltage wires can interfere
with operation under certain circumstances. We recommend
operation in a wide-open area that has limited signal
interference. Motorized skateboards are illegal on many public
roads. Owners of these boards assume all risks of operation.
Helmet, gloves, and leathers are highly recommended!
