Howdy,
I was curious what you folk's thought about these EV's www.e-ride.com . They
look neat but don't show the pricing. It looks like they're using 9ea 8V'ers
at 72V.

Allan,
There are tons of studies of the type you are looking
for (comparing fuel pathway efficiency and/or
emissions for various vehicle and fuel types). A lot
of them are carried out using the GREET model
developed by the DOE at Argonne National Labs.
For example, see the fifth slide of this presentation
:
http://www.transportation.anl.gov/pdfs/AF/270.pdf
it shows the Well-to-wheels GHG emissions for various
fuel pathways and vehicle types. According to this
model, a fuel cell vehicle fueled by H2 made from
reforming natural gas creates less GHG than an EV
charged from the US mix.
Why not compare apples to apples? If you generate Electricity from NG,
EV's make much less GHG than fool cells as EV's are 2 to 3x's as eff. Also much
Ng generating cap is in cogen plants where eff is hitting 60%.
Here in Fla, many of the worst coal plants were converted to NG gas
turbines which exhaust ran the old steam boilers, thus achieving 60% eff. Many
other new plant do this too. Sounless this is a very recent survey, they missed
out on these as the US mix has drasticly changed in the last 2 yrs..
Also CO2 is not the major or probably even a minor cause of global
warming so it in it'self is a red herring. The only real global warming gas we
have been able to prove is ice crystals from jet exhaust flying higher than
22,0000 ft.
But what you don't mentiom is most EV's are charged at night where
most of the US power comes from Nuke, hydro and increasingly wind. None of
which make GHG's.
On the other hand, a Fuel
cell vehicle fueled by H2 made from electrolysis using
the US mix is even less clean.
if you are interested in other studies (not all of
them include EV's though), there are lots of
publications listed here :
http://www.transportation.anl.gov/software/GREET/publications.html
hope that helps,

The range problem is being solved by more eff EV's that can now get
100mile + on lead batts, 200 miles on Ni-cads and 300 mile range on Li-ions of
which their price is coming down fast. Also lead batts can be charged to 80% in
15 minutes and ni-cads to 100% in the same time.

At least twice as far and in our energy short future, that is a deal
breaker. And that doesn't include the H2 infastructure, vehicle storage, cost
problems fool cells have.

John, gotta take a jab at you on this :-) A Honda EV1? Perhaps you
meant the GM EV1?
And now for the other point of view.... for me, my Honda Insight is one
of the most beautiful cars I've ever owned. It's super areo shape cheats
the wind, and the flowing lines that help make it do so, are sensuous.
From it's sleek tapered nose to it trim quarter panels with
wind-cheating skirts, to its lowered-from-the-factory stance, the
aluminum bodied tear drop shaped Insight is gorgeous to my eyes, and to
the eyes of others as well.
I've said this before on this list, but it's worth repeating...renown
car photographer John Skalicky put my car on the cover of Car Audio and
Electronics magazine back in Oct. of '01. This is a man who's
photographed Ferraris, classic American iron, concept cars....you name
it. He told me the Insight was the most beautiful car he's ever spent a
full day photographing. The cover shot that had the setting sun's low
angle rays highlighting my Insights flowing areo body lines generated
lots of letters to the magazine. Many of the authors of those letters
commented on how cool looking the hybrid car was on the cover. I have
competed with my Insight at sound-off car stereo contests and it never
fails to draw a crowd. Yes, some do think it's 'butt ugly' but often,
these same individuals think a pretentious Pontiac is good looking and
they salivate over a gawdy Humvee. The majority of the folks are more
forward thinking and say the opposite. They speak of the beauty of its
sleek design and the hunkered-down sucked-to-the-road profile.
One thing's for sure, the Insight does not invoke a tepid
reaction....you either love it or hate it. It's hard to hate a car that
can deliver in the 90+ mph range, and routinely delivers high 60's in
the city and 75 mpg at freeway speeds.

Steve;
Being an Elec-Trak user, I really enjoy reading about your all electric lawn
business.
I actually had the same idea a few years back, but never went anywhere with
it.
Glad you did and I wish you much success.
I think you may have found a great niche.
Hopefully sometime you could share your business plan, inventory of
equipment, financial results, etc..
It may encourage others to start something similar in their area.

Well it had been an exciting day up to this point but when I looked at my e
meter I had pulled 85 ah form my 25 6v golf cart pack , 10 miles form home ,
and the mower was empty. The 2 yards I had left to do I hadn't ever ask
about charging there as most of the time nobody was there . I wasn't far
from a yard and house I'm look after while the owner was selling it , and
across the street is another costumer that wanted me to fix a door and other
odds and ends. So I plugged the truck in to the dryer out let and start
pumping 30 amp into the truck ,then plugged the mower into a 120 out side
out let , and turned the pfc 50 to about 23 amp , ( thinking the 72v at 23
would need about 15 amp @ 120 .
Sure is nice when you can get to the barker box , . So next door I go and
by the time I had fixed this lady's door , changed a few light bulbs ,and
had a few cookies my truck was at - 50 and the mower was charged. Now the
house that I'm plugged into , has been sold so my nice 240 out lit there in
the middle of 3 yards is not going to be available . As I'm talking to my
customer who I've been mowing her grass for around 20 years , at the same
price , I bring up the fact the now that her neighbor has sold there house
and now with my electric mower I would really need to be ablr to plug in to
her dryer out let , .
She is probable over 80 now ,snd lives alone . She always has little things
for me to do after I cut the lawn , I don't mind but If my truck was
plugged in pumping amp , I'd feel allot better , . I offer to give her 4
times the money that the electric cost her and tried to make a joke about
how she could start her own ev gas station.
She gives me the song and dance about how she has to watch every penny and
on a fixed income . "How would you know how much electric it used" . I told
her about the meter it the truck , but could sense this was not going to
happen . Somebody should write a short paper on all the benefits that a
person or business would get from letting an electric car/truck driver plug
in .
1 the gas I don't use you can
2 while I'm plugged into your outlet , I won't be in a hurry to leave and
will be looking for thing to do for you
3 you will be doing something to help decrease our dependence on oil.
4 make a little money
I would say about 10% of my customers feel this way , no plugging in under
any conditions. Its really no big deal , as I can find someplace and if not
I can always just drive slow .
I'm off to the next 2 and its getting late . When I get there , the owner is
there , a working guy , paying about twice what the old lady was and I start
talking to him about my new electric mower , . He comes out to see it ,
thinks its way cool , tells me about all the people he's told about my
electric truck but this , woooo this is really cool , . I fire it up , spin
the blades , wooooo , . I then tell him about the extra juice it takes form
my truck and if there is a out let I might use when I mow his and the
neighbors yard . "Sure , this is a old house and there aren't any outside
outlets out side but you can get into my garage through the back door." A
nice dryer outlet is there waiting for me , and with 2 yards next to each
other , another ace in the hole for me. He laughed when I offered him money
.
I know I must sound like a newbee , and I really feel like one again , When
I read some of the stories people write just after they start driving their
ev's I can feel the excitement and I wonder if people sitting on the edge
after reading some posts don't then make the EV jump . ,

I am definately having issues. I just don't fully know what the
issues are.
Here is what is happening. I have never gotten my 16 6volt battery
pack higher than 112 volts. Things are actually worst now, I am now
down to a normal charge resulting in 101 - 102 volts total. Still
more the pack is all over the place. The batteries range
individually from 3.2 to 3.65 volts per battery. As I indicated in
my intro it is a mixed pack having both T105's and T605's. The 605's
are actually stronger than some of the 105's. I assume they are
newer. I need to recheck, but I think I may have two possibly three
dead cells. (Does this sound about right?)
Now the charger. Remember I have a K&W charger BC20. Presently I
can not charge at a rate higher then 2.5 amps with out the breaker
kicking off.
So where does the problem lie. Is it the batteries or the charger.

Hi Bill
OK, this has been done over before, essentially to get decent hp from an AC
motor in a trade off between weight and RPM you need to get the revs up (to
8,000 to 10,000 RPM). To achieve this, you need to take a (for example)
2-pole motor (that would rev at 3600RPM @ 60Hz) and apply around 150Hz. To
drive the motor at 60Hz you would need around 1.4x the normal AC voltage
for the battery pack. At 60Hz this is 230 x 1.4 = 322V. To rev higher, the
battery voltage needs to be proportionally higher, so 60:150 is x 2.5, so
the battery voltage is 2.5 x 322 = 805volts.
Now since 800-odd volts worth of batteries is a bit of a hassle to manage,
it is necessary to pull the voltage down to something more reasonable, say
300V. So to achieve this, your motor needs to be rewound to something like
0.375 x the original voltage - around 85 volts (but at 2.7 x the amps).
Now you need to find a motor controller to handle the low voltage/higher
amps motor (but at least the 300V is in the area for an off-the-shelf
industrial motor controller). I found a supplier previously for such a
drive, but I haven't had the time to dig out the details.
Alternatively someone was making an AC vehicle controller based in
(somewhere like Croatia?). The details of that escape me, too, for the
moment, but I can find out. There is/was a Ford Laser in Melbourne,
Australia with one of their systems in it. One of my employees had started
to do a conversion that was to use one of their drives, but a war over
there compromised supply, and other events prevented that vehicle being
completed.
Hope this helps

Subject: Two Ugliest Cars?
Neon John wrote:
Hello to All,
IMHO, two of the ugliest cars ever made were the Honda EV1/Insight

Peter,
You are correct in what you have stated, there are
many useless patents, but the tower is not a free
energy machine nor does it promise to produce more
energy than is put in. The name of the patent is
"Apparatus for transmitting electrical energy" My
point was to clarify that is was documented and before
anyone criticises the tower, they should at least read
the patent.
How does this have anything to do with electric cars?
Tesla's goal was to broadcast energy such that anyone
within a specific radius would be able to receive
energy without the need of wires or batteries. There
are at least two big problems: what frequency/band
width would you need/use without affecting other
transmissions, and you could not control or meter
"customer" use. He was quoted that energy would be
"free" but that was because it could not be metered at
the end user. There are stories that he drove an
electric car in the area of the tower without
batteries but used an energy "receiver". Is it true?
I dont know, but if someone has the guts to try it
again - I say go for it.
There is a book with every patent he received "The
complete patents of Nicola tesla" by Jim Glenn.
Jimmy
>Hey Jimmy, You do realize that these days the Patent
Office will patent almost
anything
For example, the Patent Office has a long standing
policy on NOT
patenting
perpetual motion machines. However, they are quite
willing to patent
over-unity machines.

the Deka Marine Mates? They claim 1110 CCA. I am hoping this will be
a step up from my concordes dislike of high amp draws. any comments

Yes Eric,
It's very similar to that, but I think the voltages are higher. My
notes on it are not handy.

Is the Zilla HEPI input compatible with the twist-grip hall effect

potentiometer.
See:
http://www.users.bigpond.com/solarbbq/throttle/throttle%20how%20they%20work.htm
Standard Zilla setup is Curtis style -- that is, to use the
potentiometer as a rheostat (2 wires).
Only inkling I get from the manual is that the HEPI inputs are
(were?) called "Aux Pot +" and "Aux Pot -", which tends to imply a
rheostat-like function, though the manual mentions that 4 wires
are connected to the hairball, not the two implied by the pinout
chart in the manual.
No, the Zilla Hepi will not work with that.
For reliable security reasons (being able to detect opens and
shorts in the connections safely) the Zilla HEPI uses two hall
inputs that are offset from each other. It actually uses six wires,
two of which are ground that connect on two different terminals.
Sorry for not relying earlier, I've been missing much of the EV list lately.

I'll be sure to do that when I rewrite it.

I've been googling around, and didn't see
the answer to this yet.
If I wanted to make my own adaptor plate,
is there a likely source for the scrap metal for it?
Something like an old flywheel?
Fuzzy logic: Since this is the Mother of all Projects
(for this year :-), I might as well grab the chance (excuse),
and buy a 3-in-1 machine shop that my friend sells commercially.
It's a compact machine that has a lathe, bench grinder,
and milling machine if I am not mistaken.
I haven't used these things since high school ;-)
Thanks.

I don't have experience with them - but as a general rule, any battery that
gives a CCA specification is ^not^ a deep cycle battery and should not be
used for that purpose.
Deka Dominators ^are^ true deep cycle batteries, and good ones when used
within their limitations, but they aren't at all happy with high currents.
The "usual culprits" for high current are
- Optima Yellow/Blue tops (group 34 or group 31)
- Exide Orbitals (pretty sure only one size - group 34?)
- Deka Intimidator (ditto)
- Hawker Genesis (many sizes, but need high current charging)
The Concordes you have can dish out higher currents than Deka Dominators,
but not as high as the ones mentioned above.
Maybe someone else has some other ideas for high current marine batteries.

Reverend Gadget made an adapter out of a flywheel. More info at the
bottom of this page:
<http://www.reverendgadget.com/gpage3.html>
Adapters are a frequent topic of discussion on this list. It generally
breaks down to buying one already designed (what I did) from someone
like <http://www.evparts.com> or <http://www.electroauto.com>, or use a
machine shop and a lot of specialized knowledge to build one to the
necessary tolerances like Victor did
(<http://www.metricmind.com/ac_honda/main2.htm>), or do it the Steve
Clunn way, by eyeball in your own garage
(<http://www.grassrootsev.com/>).

Hi Folks, I have it on good authority that EV Confidential has been sold to
Sony Pictures for an undisclosed sum of money for distribution to theaters.
It must be a great documentary to make it to the public screen. It is no
wonder when you look at the credentials of the people who created this film.
http://www.evconfidential.com/filmmakers.html. I have a sneaky suspicion
that General Motors may not appreciate this film
