Hi Drew,

If it can't handle the current your traction circuit will draw during
acceleration, you don't want it in your traction circuit. I'm not sure what
you mean by secondary. If you mean auxiliary circuits such as heater, DC-DC
or other circuits that run off the high-voltage battery, it would probably
work OK. (I'm assuming your statement on voltage and current support is
correct. I don't know anything about the contactor other than what you
wrote.)

If you mean a second (backup) contactor in the traction circuit, then no,
you don't want it there either. If used outside their voltage and current
ratings, DC contactors can become a safety issue. You want to make sure
that they are rated and equipped to break the current at maximum draw, if
needed. In an emergency, you want them to open if you try to kill the
circuit. If you are drawing 300+ amps and the contactor needs to open, you
want to make sure that it will cleanly open and break the circuit.

That is NOT a good time to have a contactor that arcs across the gap and
still keeps conducting! An undersized DC contactor could do that. It isn't
as much an issue with AC current, but is with DC.

Mike
