Michael,
I wonder if you could simply just use an interrupt button on the shifter to 
momentarily "kill" the power while shifting. Like they did on the VW 
Autosticks, pushing down on the shifter released the gate lock and triggered a 
micro switch that activated the vacuum clutch actuator. In any event, these are 
not a real beefy trans to begin with, be sure to take good care of it, when I 
lost a synchro on mine I had to hand build the parts and it was a major effort 
to get the van shifting again. One of the reasons I let mine go, was just too 
much hassle to keep going - building parts etc. IIRC I still have a rack and 
pinion laying around that I bought for mine and never used. Darned if I know 
where it is tho, LOL. Dach.
