That's actually from 1970 - John Brunner's The Sheep Look Up.  It's a 
sobering look at where the world and the US could be some tens of years 
hence if we're not careful.  

It's been a while since I read it, but I thought it was interesting that 
very early in the book the main protagonist talks about his English-made EV. 
IIRC he suggests that EVs are looked down on by certain other kinds of 
people (I don't need to name names here).  Brunner knew whereof he wrote.

I know that some folks are OK with this, but I'd also agree with you that I 
don't want anybody looking over my shoulder as I drive, EV or ICEV, unless 
he or she is sitting in the back seat by invitation.  

IIRC the low-end Leaf omits the cellular link - am I right about that?  This 
might be a good thing if you value your privacy.
