Rush, About 2 years ago or so on this list there was a discussion between several converter/builders of boats to electric. Mark Hansen was one of the people providing his story and experience, so you may find interesting info in the archives as well, in addition to the other suggestions.
BTW, what does your father plan to do with the electric drive? Just get in/out the harbor or also make the full trip on electric power? That will determine the size of battery bank... It is good to have a backup - he might want to keep the Diesel if it can provide enough electric (recharge) power or even the propulsion when needed, but not use it when sailing or as long as he has electric drive.
