'Combining motor, junction box, electronics & charger into 1 module'

The new, compact electric motor delivers similar performance to those in use today but is around 10 per cent smaller. It is a synchronous unit with a wound rotor and delivers 65 kW (88hp) and 220 Nm of torque. Renault has switched from macro-module stacking to fully integrated modules, assembled closely so that no external power supply cables are necessary. The junction box and integrated Chameleon charger (as fitted to ZOE) are contained within a single Power Electronic Controller, which is 25 per cent smaller than existing systems. The motor is now air-cooled, simplifying the system with only the Power Electronic Controller continuing to be cooled by water. Improved electronic management reduces charging times using the 3kW and 11kW flexi-cable, while a redesigned inverter improves efficiency and reducing power consumption. The new motor is around 10 per cent smaller than the one currently used in the Zoe but offers the same levels of performance despite the reduction in size. Renault won’t confirm exactly how many more miles the new motor would manage over the outgoing one, but suggested it would boost the range by about 8 per cent. As the current car has a claimed range of around 130 miles, this would mean a theoretical range of around 140 miles. As well as the increase in range, Renault says the new motor will reduce the charging time when the car is plugged into lower-powered sockets. In the UK, this would equate to a reduction of around 20 minutes when plugged into a standard home wall box. The Chameleon charger remains the same, so the Zoe will be able to adapt itself to different power sources. However, it is not supplied with a three-pin plug, so owners have to fit a charging unit at home. Power and torque outputs from the motor remain unchanged, at 87bhp and 162lb ft, so the performance remains the same. The current Zoe can reach 62mph in 13.5 seconds, and has a top speed of 84mph. Renault has acheived much of the size reduction by moving the junction box, power electronics and Chameleon charger into one box. The firm says that it worked with Nissan on the processes behind developing this new motor, but the final design was created by Renault’s engineers in France. The new motor will be available in the Zoe from spring 2015. Get the latest car news, reviews and galleries from Autocar direct to your inbox every week. Smaller, more efficient electric motor for the Zoe [image http://cdn2.autoexpress.co.uk/sites/autoexpressuk/files/styles/w620/public/8/97//new-electric-motor.jpg Renault Electric Motor ] A completely new electric motor will be fitted to the Zoe and Kangoo EV from Spring 2015. By combining the motor, junction box, power electronics and charger into a single module it has been reduced in size by 10 per cent, but more importantly it should improve the Zoe’s 130-mile range by around 10 per cent, too. Power and torque remain constant at 87bhp and 220Nm. Other improvements include reduced charging times when using low-power supplies. We were told that a standard UK three-pin socket top-up time will be reduced by around 20 minutes ...
