But their exact structure was unclear. Are these glass-laminates, or are they 
acrylic or some other plastic?

The power output of plastic laminated panels falls off rather quickly with age. 
I'd also be concerned about their durability, without a frame and all. If they 
are glass-lam, just a slight twisting motion could break them.
