Tesla Recalls 2,700 Model X Cars for Seat Problem

Tesla has voluntarily issued a recall for its long-delayed SUV because of a
faulty seat part.

Electric car maker Tesla Motors has recalled all of its Model X SUV cars
that were manufactured before March 26, which includes 2,700 cars, due to an
issue with the third row seats ...

Tesla notes that following an internal safety test, the company discovered
that the recliner, which uses a latch for the third row seats, could slip
unexpectedly. Because of the faulty latch, in the event of a front crash,
the third row seats could fold forward based on the weight of a passenger.

Tesla reiterated during a press call that the issue was discovered through
rigorous testing, assering no one has been injured through the defect.

Tesla told its customers on Monday that it has started a voluntary recall of
the affected Model X cars, and customers should bring the cars into a Tesla
service center to be fixed.

The fix would take about two hours, Tesla estimated. The car maker will
replace the third row seat backs and recliners in all of the effected Model
X cars.

The seat recliner was made by supplier Futuris Automotive, based in Long
Beach, Calif. The problem was a manufacturing flaw, explained Tesla.

Tesla says that Futuris will cover the costs of replacing the seat backs and
recliners. Tesla also said it doesn’t expect the recall to effect it
financially, projecting the replacements to be done within five weeks ...

Tesla issuing first recall for Model X crossover SUV
April 11, 2016 Chris Woodyard ...

Tesla Motors said Monday it will issue the first recall of its new Model X
crossover SUV to replace the third-row seat backs because of a faulty latch
that could fail in a crash.

The electric vehicle maker says the voluntary recall will cover 2,700 of the
luxury crossovers built before March 26 to replace the seat backs with a new
design.

Tesla said the recall results from a seat-back test to make sure the vehicle
meets European standards. The latch failed to hold the seat upright on that
test and subsequent ones despite having previously passed 15 tests and
meeting U.S. standards.

Jon McNeill, Tesla's president of sales, service and delivery, told
reporters that the failure was due to a manufacturing flaw by the outside
vendor that makes the seat backs. There have been no reports from owners of
the latch failing.

"We put safety at the very top of our list in terms of our priority, so if
there is any probability of an issue, we will take action," McNeill said.

Tesla plans to contact each of the owners of the vehicles and send workers
to make the replacement. The repair takes about two hours.

The Model X, distinguished by its gull-wing-style, upward-opening rear-seat
doors, went into production last year. Its production levels are still
dwarfed by Tesla's luxury sedan, the Model S.

While it is the first recall for the Model X, there have been three for the
Model S, Tesla officials say.
