Tesla Motors said the Model S sedan involved in the crash wasn't running on the semi-autonomous Autopilot and that the speed is consistent with the vehicle's damage. But the American electric vehicle pioneer now launching an investigation into Wednesday's incident said the victim was not driving on auto-pilot during the crash, which happened in the eastern Dutch town of Baarn. "We can confirm at this time, based on the car's logs that the auto-pilot, had not been activated at any point", Tesla Netherlands told AFP, adding "the vehicle was driving at 155 kilometers (96 miles) per hour". "We are working with the authorities to establish the full facts surrounding the accident". The Silicon Valley-based company has sent a representative to the scene. Ronald Boer, an emergency services spokesman, said firefighters did not recover the man's body immediately because of fears of electrocution. Fire department spokesman Ronald Boer said that due to the nature and severity of the wreckage, firefighters could not be certain whether the auto might be under high voltage. Apart from sending its technical team, Tesla also provides user manuals to firefighters/rescuers to assist them in handling its cars after an accident, according toElectrek. Tesla has cautioned that the system, introduced past year, is not fully autonomous and drivers should be at the wheel and ready to take control. It is the second fatal crash involving a Tesla electric vehicle, after a driver was killed in May in Florida while driving on auto-pilot. The driver can override the system by using the normal controls. It uses the data to make improvements to the autopilot and other functions, which are beamed to customers through over-the-air software updates. The Model S sedan crashed into a tree, setting the vehicle on fire in the Dutch town of Baarn. USA federal regulators also recorded two fires involving the Model S, one each in the states of Washington and Tennessee in 2013.
