The incident occurred either Saturday or Sunday at Crow Canyon Road when a
man driving a Tesla Model S veered off the roadway, broke through a fence
and drove into a pond, said Daniel Jacowitz, a spokesman for the California
Highway Patrol.

Authorities received a call about 7:50 p.m. Sunday from a resident who
noticed debris damage to their property and suspected a vehicle had crashed
into the nearby pond, Jacowitz said.

Keith Leung, of Danville, was identified as the driver and pronounced dead
at the scene, said Sgt. Ray Kelly, a spokesman for the Alameda County
Sheriff’s Office.

CASTRO VALLEY — A one-time member of the Cal marching band and chemical
engineer died Sunday night when his electric car crashed through a fence and
into a pond, authorities said.

Keith Leung, 34, of Danville, died after the Tesla Model S Sedan he was
driving went through a fence on property in the 11000 block of Crow Canyon
Road, just south of Bollinger Canyon Road, California Highway Patrol
spokesman Officer Dan Jacowitz said. He died at the scene.

An Alameda County Sheriff’s Office dive team found the car with Leung inside
it after combing through the pond for several hours, authorities said.

According to a Facebook page dedicated to Cal band alumni, Leung played the
clarinet and mellophone among many instruments. He graduated from Cal in
2006, according to the page.

Leung’s LinkedIn page said he was a chemical engineer and played for various
musical groups. He had been a member of the Danville Community Band since
September 2001.

CHP officers responded to the scene around 7:50 p.m., after a resident on
the property called 911, Jacowitz said. They arrived to find debris from the
vehicle, as well as a broken fence and broken sign located off the roadway,
he said.

That debris and other clues at the scene led the CHP to believe the car went
into the pond, and they called the dive team. That team arrived around 10
p.m., and about nine members went below the water to find the car.

“It was an intense situation for them,” Jacowitz said. “They had zero
visibility, heavy brush. There were lots of obstructions to work through.
They spent several hours down there.”

Leung was still in the car when divers found it. It was about 65 feet away
from the entrance to the pond, Jacowitz said.

“Those vehicles are designed to get wet,” Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt.
Ray Kelly said. “We took precautions, and made the proper calls to make sure
that if they touched the car, the divers were safe.”

According to Jacowitz, investigators believe Leung was going north on Crow
Canyon Road when the crash happened. He said it’s too early to determined
with drugs or alcohol were involved.

“This is a very tragic situation,” he said.

Crow Canyon Road was closed overnight as the CHP investigated the crash. The
road reopened at 5:46 a.m.
