One of the trends of the last few decades that concerns me is a fetish for rules. There's less and less room for human judgment and flexibility. Authority figures seem to take delight in clubbing you with "those are the rules, too bad." It's a form of passive aggression. Increasingly, those rules are blindly enforced by algorithms. Want to know what it's like to deal with that? Just ask anyone who's applied for jobs recently. Applications are routinely rejected by opaque computer programs, for reasons that no one in charge knows, cares about, or will tell you. Or talk to a person living in a rough or borderline neighborhood about "predictive policing" algorithms and the stop-and-frisk "papers please" policies they support. I can see the day coming when the law will decree that your car's driving computer always knows better than you what's safe, and it will become illegal and/or impossible to override it. Already there's discussion in the EU about making GPS control of vehicle speed limiters mandatory, with limited bypass available. I may be mistaken, but I think I recall reading that such rules are already in place for some classes of commercial trucks. But of course it's all for our own good, right? Oversold "full self drivng" and similar inflexible rules-based bots are the foundation on which such a dystopian future is likely to be built.
