The Chinese automaker BYD is now the world's #1 EV manufacturer in sales. In 2025, they sold 2,256,714 BEVs, an increase of almost 28% from 2024.
BYD's true hybrid (PHEV) sales declined 7.9%. BYD's sales were also somewhat weak in China because of increasing competition. However, outside China they rose a remarkable 150%. Tesla was the former international leader, but their sales have declined for the second year in a row, from 1,789,226 in 2024 to 1,636,129 in 2025 (- 8.6%). However, BYD would have taken top spot internationally even if Tesla's sales had held steady. Tesla are still the US EV sales leader, with the MY seling about 5 times as many units as the Chevrolet Equinox EV in 2025. Tesla now considers itself an "AI" and robotics company. They've also said that they think that in the future people won't own cars. So presumably they're not too concerned about their EV sales.
