Thank you, Erica, that does help! I wasn’t having any problems with the Enumeration part, just the Chronology, and since the Alternative Chronology option wasn’t supplying anything that looks different from the regular chronology, it was very confusing. I really am not sure when I would ever need to use it.
Sometimes there’s just no good way to get a working prediction using the wizard, so being able to create a pattern code in a text editor outside of Evergreen and paste it into the serials pattern to test it was extremely helpful. Since we’re a State Library, we get so many publications with odd patterns with our government documents and genealogy subscriptions that looking at the MARC coding standards and manually creating patterns for testing was the only way I got working predictions for a lot of titles. And I have a document file listing the odd patterns I had created so that if another title came in that used that pattern, we could just copy it and paste it into Evergreen. I’m not quite sure how we will be able to deal with that going forward. If you create a bug for that issue, let me know, and I’ll add heat! The alternative enumeration works like the regular enumeration option. It's just meant to help record any instances of serials that require fascicles or any other numbering schemes in addition to a regular scheme of enumeration (example: NGS Magazine January - March 2022; Volume 48, Number 1). The Serials module was built rather rigidly based on the LOC 853-855 - Captions and Pattern-General Information<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.loc.gov/marc/holdings/hd853855.html__;!!HYmSToo!MasNBxyaLeVIISfJQ1tqzURXnVV3R0eMmro0RhvO7wjQFF_AH8qtLNWtha94O8FA0A2E$> In the Enumeration Labels tab (corresponding to the LOC Enumeration caption), the regular enumeration allows for up to 6 levels of enumeration, while the Alternative allows for up to 2 levels. In the Chronology Display tab (corresponding to the LOC Chronology caption), the regular chronology allows for up to 4 levels of chronology, while the alternative chronology allows for 1 level. The Evergreen pattern wizard is mirroring the LOC standards. I will say that I also miss the capability of simply pasting in a raw pattern code. I agree with you. Sharing pattern codes and directly entering JSON was an advantage in the Serials module. I thought that I already created a bug for it, but I'm not seeing one. Does this help? Is this working the way it is supposed to, or is there a bug? If it is working as designed, then I don’t know what it would be used for. It doesn’t seem functional. Do not click links or open attachments unless you verify. Send all suspicious email as an attachment to Report Spam.<mailto:[email protected]> I’m working on an odd serial today. My experience with creating patterns in serials has been with XUL, but we’re now on the web interface (version 3.7.2). I’ve run into an issue with the Chronology Captions while trying to create a new pattern. The serial in hand uses traditional volume and number for enumeration, but is using “1st Quarter”, “2nd Quarter”, etc. for the chronology, rather than months or seasons. When I go to create a pattern and I get to the Chronology Display, I tried checking “Use Alternative Chronology Captions”, but that only gives me Level 1. There’s no option to get a second level for the Alternative captions. If I click Add Level, it only adds a level to “Use Chronology Captions”, not to the alternative chronology. And even if it did add to the alternative chronology, would there be any way to add a free text chronology? Under Alternative Chronology, Level 1 still gives you only the standard options in a dropdown. If I uncheck the Use Chronology Captions box, while leaving the Use Alternative Chronology Captions box checked, trying to get it to show only the Alternative Option, that gets rid of the chronology option entirely, and the section for the Alternative Chronology completely disappears. Is this a bug? I searched Launchpad, but couldn't find anything like this. I will say that I also miss the capability of simply pasting in a raw pattern code. I used to copy shared codes, or simply create my own in notepad and paste them into XUL. And I could test patterns that way until I found one that worked.
