Ubuntu *is* (a) Debian (derivative), just with a custom set of
personality modifications designed for shielding its users from the
underlying power of FOSS, e.g. Unity (aka only one way), and sudo (Ugh!).

But it is easier to handle, isn't it? More popular.

Methinks result of marketing (aka $$$) to n00b power, and Google returning askubuntu.com hits on virtually every Linux query (even when -ubuntu is a search term). Maybe not so good for anyone already exposed to the power of Linux and/or comfy with that power.

sudo can be bypassed. "sudo su -" for instance.

Permanently:

        sudo passwd root

Then empty the sudoers list.
