And not only fear of unhappiness.  Depression (not the clinical kind) is your 
brain telling you you need to change your life.

You need to chamge your life in order to be happy, but what if you could be just as happy, at lower cost, without changing your life? You could even stipulate as a rule (although I'm not sure it would be necessary) that no alteration to increase happiness will be allowed to decrease biological or social fitness.
