Subject: Re: First Ever Universe-Wide Cosmic Web Filaments Captured on Keck
Observatory

Apart from "Wow! Cool!" ... :-)

The researchers estimated the amount of gas in the nebula to be at least ten
times more than expected from the results of computer simulations. "We think
there may be more gas contained in small dense clumps within the cosmic web
than is seen in our models. These observations are challenging our
understanding of intergalactic gas and giving us a new laboratory to test
and refine our models," Cantalupo said.

>>Does this (as extrapolated to the rest of the universe) make a significant
contribution to the overall density of the universe? Will cosmologists have
to revise their estimates of the amount of dark matter or dark energy as a
result?

It would still have been - up until this baby picture - of baryonic dark
matter <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baryonic_dark_matter> . I realize and
am in synch with dark matter intending the exotic hypothesized stuff - these
WIMPS if you will. If I recall, back when it first became news that the need
for

But back when it first swept in there was considerable resistance to the
introduction of exotic forms of matter. A vigorous attempt was mounted to
explain the required mass discrepancy by proposing various forms of ordinary
baryonic matter together could add up. In the end this rear guard action to
keep things baryonic faltered and fell by the way side. Perhaps this moves
the dial a little pushing the amount of baryonic stuff up a bit; I don't
think (could be wrong though) that it will move the basic percentages adding
up to the universes critical density by very much.

Certainly interesting though and I am curious to see how, as this ripples
through the scientific community, it will change views on subjects like
galaxy formation for example.
