the church - so they owed no taxes.

The church then provided them with homes, cars, vacations in Europe,
boats, lakefront lodges, food, ...
The best liturgy!
After a few years the IRS decided this wasn't really a religion.
... probably not enough brainwashing and child molesting to be a
'religion' (cynical remark).
