To best understand the why, questions, one must get outside of religion and comprehend the how, questions. How, is this put together, how does it change, how does it function? You can also grammatically, use what, instead of how. But it's the same analytical human process. A revelation in a cave from an archangel is interesting, but what is an angel, and how did he get to that cave, is the more interesting of questions then merely what was 'revealed.'
