Both Merkel and Macron could see the writing on the wall during the Trump presidency. This is more likely to happen in the post-Brexit EU. The UK was the main actor blocking it. But before that, we will have to deal with yet another wave of refugees created by US military interventions. And while we deal with it, I am sure that US populist pundits will once again at the same time criticize us for doing it, crying about "the fall of Europe" and spreading "news" about the streets of Copenhagen being awash in brown men raping blond women, etc ad nauseam. European populist pundits usually join the party, but this time they might not, given how much of a shit-show Brexit (a direct consequence of such "news") has been.
