It is completely demolished by the delayed choice experiments. You can delay the choice as to whether or not to utilize the information about which slit the particle went through until long after that particle has hit the screen and formed its permanent image on the screen. It cannot decide whether or not to interfere with itself to produce an interference pattern at that time -- the decision about where to hit the screen has long since been made. So there can be no "merging of two separate worlds" at that point.
