OK I have managed to get it working again. ~/evolution/mail/imap/tony@worldcompany/INBOX/ may have become corrupt moving from one version to another. In fact Ctrl-d was probably working as advertized but screen refresh was broken. I was deleting mail and it was disapearing from the mail list pane. In fact it was still there marked as deleted but I couldn't see it.
