i believe this is explained in the manual. the virtual folder only updates itself when you switch away from it.
this is so in normal operation, you use that folder to read your unread mail, andwhen you come back to it, its refreshed. you can also do an expunge to force a refresh. this is so that you can actually use it, and dont click on a messageand have it vanish instantly as its status goes from unread to read,it then selects the next unread message, and basically reads the whole mailbox itself.
