The only way it worked for us was by putting the server's IP address instead of its host name in "Global catalog server name".
Also, remember that the connector uses the Outlook Web Access interface (HTTP on port 80) while LDAP uses 389 or 636 (SSL). If you are connecting to the Exchange server from the outside, make sure you also open the corresponding LDAP port (Beware) on your firewall.
