Hi Sukumar,

$ is used for making the range static. i.e making the range fixed and it will 
not chnage even if you copy paste the same formula in below cells.
eg. lets say u have data from Cells A2 to A20 
if you write your formula in B2 as =sum(A2:A20) and copy paste the same formula 
in cell B3 you will see formula as =sum(A3:A21).
on the other hand if you make it static i.e. =SUM($A$2:$A$20) and paste it B3, 
B4 and so on.. its range will remain the same i.e. even in B3 formula will 
remain as =SUM($A$2:$A$20)

to make the range static jus press F4 when you select the range i.e. in above 
case wen u write =Sum(A2:A20 immediately press F4 the formula will convert to 
=SUM($A$2:$A$20 and then continue
