Question:
Will each user already be logged into a Windows machine?

using the following functions, you can use something like:

USRID = ReturnUserName()

to determine who is logged in.

I utilize an external database (I use Oracle, but you could use MS Access or
even write to a binary file).
In the database, I assign "groups".
The group designations determine what sheets are displayed.

So, I hide all sheets (except a cover sheet) and protect the workbook.

Engineer_ReadOnly group members will have specific sheets made "visible" but
not unprotected.
Engineer_Write group members have the same sheets visible, but fields are
unlocked.

Admin groups see all sheets and all are unlocked.

This technique doesn't rely on people remembering their password, but instead
relies on their ability to log into Windows and the Network environment.
