Last time I downloaded and installed the free version Trillian (its been at least a year), it came "bundled" with some spyware.

My turn to jump in here. There is a great IM application called Trillian. It is compatible with Yahoo!, MSN, IRC/ICQ and AOL IM clients. While yes, you do have to have individual accounts with each of these systems, Trillian will monitor you buddy lists from each one of these service from one convenient window and let you know when any of them are online. You can send IM's back and forth from Trillian to any of these IM products and you only need to have the Trillian client installed on your machine. Now...I have never been willing to pay for the Pro version of the product, because I have been quite happy with the free version. But it is quite likely that you can do much of the logging/blocking stuff people are talking about, with the Pro version Finally...I know that you can monitor and record outbound and inbound chat sessions via an internal/external IDS system. They do that here at work. All logging is encrypted and saved to disk and then the data stream has to be put back together and then decrypted, in order to be readable. It gives me the ability, for instance, to allow students to use AOL for IM but not for file transfers or they can fetch music with Kazaa but not share files out to the rest of the world and I can do these things from a single web-based console - no desktop configuration required.
