I would suspect he purged his Palm calendar, and then synchronized with Outlook. The standard option in Palm when you purge is to remove all items older than two weeks, unless it's recurring.
I have no idea why they wouldn't be in his deleted items folder. That's where they should be, if they were removed during a Palm synch.
