DVD and CD is not a reliable long term back medium.

Another , more acceptable option to your boss, would be removable hard drives. I know
of a few people using these and cycling them

If you snuck in a tape drvie, stick with that format when you by more.

Additioanally look at how you would recover the whole server and configuration using
what you have now......... Most backup software has a "one disk" disaster recovery
option.
How long would the company be ourt of business.........whislt you recovered??

Sounds like your only covering your self for data file corruption.
Civil Engineers are an interesting bunch........................... I used to work
with electrical/telecommunications engineers as well.

Can anyone recommend their favorite Autodesk newsgroup?
Does anyone out there support Autodesk or a Civil Engineering or
Architecture environment? I have to give the President in the company a
reality check on the demands of the backup travesty he insists on, and would
like to discuss best practices with someone. He had a bad experience with
tapes once (1998) and refuses to even consider going back to it. I am having
to backup 80G to DVD every month.

(Don't panic, this is for file server only, I snuck in a tape drive for
Exchange when I built it. He found out last month.) Thank you for your time.
Rachel
