We use a layered approach. Symantec on the Desktop and servers and Trend
ScanMail 6.2 on the Exchange server. The non-password protected zips can't
be scanned by ScanMail, but Norton catches those if a Stupid User tries to
open them. We also use clamav on a couple of Linux gateway boxes to prescan
everything inbound before it even gets to the exchange boxes, but that is
still being tested.

I have read some threads indicating ScanMail is catching these, but I think
that is the non-password protected version as no AV that I'm aware of can
open a password protected zip file otherwise what's the point of using
passwords for real stuff.

We use Symantec and have been virus free. So I think the issue is not
*which* virus protection program you use, but *how* you use it, and what
supporting procedures you use (such as attachment blocking, email scanning,
user education).

Subject: Sophos Antivirus Recommencation

In reading the posts of the past few days regarding virus problems, I am

surprised Sophos Antivirus Software seems to have escaped mention. This
antivirus solution is low on the admin side since it automatically
downloads updates to a central server that automates distribution to
clients and server machines. What should make it interesting to you is
that the client can be configured to scan open mailboxes in addition to
the drives of the local machine or attached drive letters. All client
and server machines using Sophos in our organization have been virus
free. Maryellen Thompson
