Sorry for the late entry to this thread, and if my suggestion has been covered before. You're trying to route outbound mail to a different SMTP server, no? You can set the outbound port (SMTP->delivery->outbound connections). Then, have another SMTP engine (or another system) pick up the SMTP traffic on that port, and route as you want to.
If you're routing based on domain, couldn't you also use a SMTP connector?
