If you have applied MS04-011 to your domain controllers, you are
probably seeing the effects of a bug/flaw in that patch. MS has a patch
to address the issue. Alternately, you can address it by stopping the
netlogon service on the DC, deleting the file
%systemroot%\system32\config\netlogon.dns, then restarting the netlogon
service. This will force a rebuild of this file. A quick "ipconfig
/registerdns" ensures that it is added immediately to DNS.

The MS article talking about the issue and patch is at

Its in the same site and domain as the exchange server.

I did notice that there isn't an _gc dns record for the server even
though it claims, and other utilities recognize it as a GC. Exchange
simply won't recognize it as a GC (or a DC for that matter).

I turned up logging on DS and I can see it listed as a valid DS, but it
won't list in Exchange's DS drop down server lists. If I put it in
manually and force it to use it Exchange gets a little Pissed off and
won't allow MAPI clients to work appropriately.

I'm currently trying to figure out why the GC didn't register itself in
dns as a _gc all its other records where registered. I manually created
a _gc service location record for it in the site it is associated with,
but that didn't make any difference.

Also, the GC must be in the same domain.

Subject: Can't see GC?

Any suggestions as to why Exchange 2000 might not see a valid local GC
when it exists? I have tried to manually set it to a separate GC so
that I can rebuild the original one, but Outlook goes nuts and it can't
seem to see the GC, and when it is set for Auto it never shows up in the
list.

I'm assuming this is probably an AD problem, but as all the AD tools
report it as a valid GC for my domain I don't understand why Exchange
can't use it.

Any suggestions of something else to check/test?
