Delivery receipt is requested through a message header entry.

You may be right and maybe I hadn't had enough coffee when I read it this
morning.

However, I don't see that anything about the header tells me why it didn't
send a delivery notification back to the SMTP address of the dl.
And it still doesn't clue me in as to why local notices don't come in
either.

I realize that DL-EMTGROUP sent it, but user B being the owner of the group
and/or the "Message Originator" used to receive the delivery confirmations.
It was working this way previously.  Now User B doesn't even receive
internal confirmations, only NDR messages.

BTW, I have several clues, just not why people can't answer questions with
helpful answers (OR IGNORE THEM if they don't have a helpful answer).

If you feel that it was a dumb question or that I should be able to figure
the answer out myself, then perhaps you could ignore the question and it
will die on its own.

User B didn't send the message, DL-EMTGROUP did.  Send a message like that
to a Yahoo! or Hotmail mailbox and examine the headers, and you might get a
clue why it doesn't work.

OK, I appreciate the comments and understand the vagaries of using the
receipting process.  Yes tracking works, but isn't a viable option as it
simply shows that it delivered the message our smarthost.

The problem is that even for internal deliveries the read/delivery notices
don't come back (I have used group policy to force Outlook to answer to
them) when the "FROM" address is a DL.  If the "FROM" address is a user
account it works as it should (and did).  We are part of a larger forest and
it is possible that the upstream group changed a global setting (not any
that I can see though).

User A sends as him/herself with delivery confirmation.  User A receives
delivery confirmation.

User B sends as DL-EMTGROUP with delivery confirmation.  User B never
receives said confirmations.

Once an email is tagged with a read or delivery receipt and leaves your
exchange environment, you at the mercy of every other email client the email
is sent to. So just do not think about even getting one back externally

Internally, the read and delivery process is so flakey with so many ways it
can be circumvented (OWA 2003 and OL2003 for example) that if you can get it
working by sending from the user, I would just be thankful and accept that.
I am not familiar with ex2000 having skipped that version.
Is their a message tracking center in it that you can look at the messages
to see the receipts moving around in the system?

The receipts should never be relied apon for indicating whether or not the
person at the other end has opened the email , let alone read it.

We have started noticing that when a user (owner) sends a message "From"
a DL with a read or delivery confirmation they no longer receive the
confirmations.  The do receive appropriate NDR messages.

We have a user that sends out Emergency medical notifications (no HIPAA
issues) "From" a DL, she is also the owner of the DL in question.  For
funding and other guidelines we have to document that we attempted to
deliver the message to all appropriate parties.  As such we were using the
Delivery confirmations and Outlook's tracking options as a report showing
either delivered or NDRs as attempts.

Any idea what would cause only the delivery and read confirmations to not
come back?  If she sends as herself (an account instead of DL) the
confirmations come back appropriately.  This had been working previously.  I
have also verified that this problem exists across our site with all
versions of Outlook and not just hers.
