You are correct regarding OWA access- it opens docs in a flash. To check the
issue of referring back to an admin point I will re-install office from a CD
- its definitely worth a try.

Do you have any part of the office 2003 install referring back to the
administrative point. I have a similar issue with OL2003 and office 2000
admin install as I have replaced the network (read cabling and switches) and
moved off novell to native windows and we *still* have similar delays, which
are variable it slowness on a GB backbone network.

If the user opens up the same message via OWA I will bet you a fish taco it
will be instantaneous, which leads me to belive it is the admin install and
some sort of network drive connection timeout, DNS resoultion or similar.
I belive the attachment opening in OWA only uses a minimal footprint for
word, but opening via ol2003 uses a larger footprint that causes referal to
the admin point, which is cusing the problem

Cheers
Dean

Users are in a local office (typically) with between 5-15 users. Link speed
is 1.5M/256k. The file is small (50Kb or so) and can take 30 secs to open.
The problem is isolated to one or 2 users in an office and office 2003 was
rolled out using a centralised administrative point so all users should have
the same settings. All users are set to download full message. Interestingly
if the file is saved to the desktop then opened using word it opens fine.

You mentioned that your users connect over VPN, so I assume all the users
are remote.

What is the user connection speed and the size of the attachments? I had a
user connect via VPN over a 28.8 Kps modem line and try to open
5MB+ attachments. He then called me up (over the same line) to complain
that the e-mail wasn't opening up and that the server must be down because
he just lost the connection.

It could also be that your LAN - broadband connection is a bottleneck,
depending on how many users are accessing data on your servers. Does your
firewall/router track throughput load?
