Outlook POP access. As soon as you enable POP3 virtual server on Exchange
server, store.exe spikes CPU . usage gets to 100 % . Why cannot run
integrity check ? huge database ( over 400 GB ) cannot afford to be offline.
Disable POP3 and all works just fine.

Thousands of users or thousands of companies?

Having a second server in your exchange org gives you certain levels of
redundancy, such as the GAL, OAB, Public Folders (if you replicate all that
across all the servers). It can be used to take over for SMTP traffic, OWA,
etc.

The key is your store data, where the mailboxes exist. If it sits on the
physical primary server, you need a way to replicate it. Or you could move
it to hardware not on the physical server. It really depends on what level
of redundancy and high availability you are after.

I use Double-Take to provide real-time bit-by-bit data replication of all my
stores, but it's not cheap (nor does MS officially support this, but
thousands of people do it with no issue)

Basically, I am trying to create a backup server that I can implement
rapidly in case of a catastrophy. Uptime is key.

Nothing. Outlook will get redirected to the location of the mailbox. So if
the mailbox is still on the first server it will automatically connect to
the first server.

Move or create a mailbox on the new server, and connect to that mailbox for
your test.
