There's nothing in official documentation. For Outlook 2000-2003 is non-cached
mode, the "magic number" has always been 10,000 items in the default top-level
folders. That number has come from PSS on multiple occasions. Nothing in
Outlook BREAKS after that, but the performance goes downhill drastically.
Cached mode helps that some, but the local cache has limits too.

Entourage WILL stop working after 10,000 items. I have a case with PSS right
now that seems to indicate that number might actually be lower for WebDAV
clients...

I have 29,000 emails in my Sent Items. Why? Because I can. Is it slow?
Sure, but it still works just fine.

Not that I don't believe you from empirical evidence, but I would appreciate
any link to Microsoft's info on this. We have had numerous discussions with
people here at the office and it always comes down to "show me the money".

I have looked for quite a while, and I am sure I am not using the proper search
terms, but this link would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
